Urban Talks: The Role Of Metropolises In Leading A Just Transition On World Metropolitan Day

As part of the World Metropolitan Day on October 14, 2024, the "Urban Talks: The Role of Metropolises in Leading a Just Transition" session will be held, organized in collaboration with the Marmara Municipalities Union Center for Sustainability and Climate Change, the Center for Urban Policies, and Boğaziçi University.

The session, titled "The Role of Metropolises in Leading a Just Transition," will explore Istanbul’s energy and water footprints within the context of a just transition. Dr. Cem İskender Aydın from Boğaziçi University will discuss the impact of Istanbul’s energy consumption on other cities, while Dr. İrem Daloğlu Çetinkaya will evaluate where the city sources its water and the injustices that result from these processes. This session will offer a comprehensive discussion on how metropolises can reduce their ecological footprints and the role of local governments in this transition.

World Metropolitan Day, celebrated every year on October 14, commemorates the adoption of the Montreal Declaration on Metropolitan Areas. The day aims to raise awareness about the governance of cities and the importance of metropolitanization. Organized by Metropolis and UN-Habitat, the event focuses on the relationship between cities and their surroundings, highlighting economic and social dynamics, and aims to contribute to the creation of more just and sustainable metropolises. As the majority of the world’s population lives in cities, metropolises play a crucial role in addressing global challenges such as climate change and public health. In this framework, activities are organized during the month called “Urban October” to contribute to the formation of cities with high quality of life at the local level and to develop visions that will increase the competence of local governments in this field.
