Gathering on the Shores for the 5th Year: June 8, Marmara Sea Day

Observed annually on June 8, Marmara Sea Day will bring stakeholders together for its fifth consecutive year in 2026. Events will take place simultaneously across the seven provinces bordering the Marmara Sea, with activities continuing throughout the week as part of Türkiye Environment Week.

Since its inception in 2022, Marmara Sea Day has focused on a unique theme each year. Following previous years’ focus on microplastics, marine litter, biodiversity, and ecosystem restoration, the 2026 theme is: “Marine Water Temperature”.

Why “Marine Water Temperature”?

The theme for Marmara Sea Day 2026 has been determined as “Marine Water Temperature” one of the most tangible indicators of climate change. The semi enclosed structure of Marmara Sea and its transitional position between Mediterranean and Black Sea make it an extremely sensitive early warning system against temperature changes. Even minor fluctuations in water temperature can drastically impact biological productivity and chemical balances. Because seas warm and cool more slowly than land, monitoring temperature changes is essential for understanding the region’s ecological health and developing effective management strategies.

Participation from All Stakeholders

Marmara Sea Day is a collaborative initiative uniting regional municipality, NGOs, universities, the private sector, and citizens of all ages. We invite city councils, student clubs, and volunteers to organize awareness campaigns and conservation activities aimed at protecting the Marmara Sea.

All activities will be added to the event map and shared on social media using the hashtags #MarmaraSeaDay and #MarmaraBelongstoAllofUs.

On Marmara Sea Day, municipalities, NGOs, universities, city councils, student clubs, the private sector, and citizens will be able to organize events for the protection of Marmara Sea.
