Ahmet Akın Elected President of Marmara Municipalities Union

At the 2026 First Ordinary Assembly Meeting of Marmara Municipalities Union (MMU), held in Istanbul on April 29, 2026, Ahmet Akın, Mayor of Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality, was elected President by the votes of the assembly members. During the meeting, Union’s executive board members, presidential council, audit committee, planning and budget committee, and other specialized commission members were also determined.

As a result of the ballots cast by the assembly members, Mayor Akın secured the presidency. Concurrently, the following mayors were elected by the assembly to MMU’s Executive Board:

Melek Mızrak Subaşı, Mayor of Bilecik

Ayşegül Ovalıoğlu, Mayor of Bakırköy

M. Ergün Turan, Mayor of Fatih

Ahmet Sarıkurt, Mayor of Çorlu

Zinnur Büyükgöz, Mayor of Gebze

Oktay Yılmaz, Mayor of Yıldırım

Ercan Özalp, Mayor of Vize

The leadership hierarchy was further solidified with the election of Çanakkale Mayor Muharrem Erkek as First Deputy Speaker, while Pendik Mayor Ahmet Cin was re-elected as Second Deputy Speaker.

In addition to the leadership transition, the assembly reviewed and unanimously approved the 2025 Annual Activity Report, presented by MMU Secretary General M. Cemil Arslan.
